Parkinsons ZA
Introduction:
Parkinsons Disease South Africa NPC (“Parkinsons ZA”) was established in 2021 as a registered non-profit organisation to provide an umbrella of support to People with Parkinsons Disease, their carers and family members – collectively ‘People impacted by Parkinsons Disease’. Parkinsons ZA’s objective is to improve the overall quality of life for People impacted by Parkinsons Disease. In this regard, Parkinsons ZA introduced a multidisciplinary rehabilitation support program incorporating inter-alia physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and lifestyle management. The program is offered on a weekly basis free of charge to the community of Durban and boasts a membership of over 100 People with Parkinsons. Parkinsons ZA is in the process of replicating this program in Johannesburg. In addition, Parkinson’s ZA is the voice for People impacted by Parkinsons Disease in South Africa through various advocacy roles and awareness campaigns.
Focal areas/services:
- Promoting public awareness about Parkinsons so that People impacted by Parkinsons are informed, enabled and supported;
- Providing support and lifestyle management tools to promote a better overall quality life for People impacted by Parkinsons
- Sourcing and disseminating the latest information to People impacted by Parkinsons
- Advocating for research, resources and supportive policies and systems to support People impacted by Parkinsons
- Collaborating with the global Parkinsons community and allied health professionals to develop resources to support People impacted by Parkinsons Disease
